Citizen of the Year:
Each Lodge is encouraged to select a Citizen, not necessarily an elk, who has contributed in a special way to improving the local community. This individual should be someone who has shown leadership in the community, has contributed voluntary service and is recognized as being an all-around good citizen. The selection is yours alone-promote it! Recognizing such a person help show that the Elks are concerned with building a good community, and demonstrates "Elks Share-Elks Share." After the selection, or him or her by presenting the award at a dinner sponsored by the Lodge, or in conjunction with a community-Knight program sponsored by a local civic organization. The full name (no nicknames) of the person selected should be submitted to the Grand Secretary in writing so that an inscribed citation may be issued to be "Citizen of the Year." Not issued before January 1 and postmark deadline is March 31.
Our Mission:
The Georgia Elks Association State Lodge Activities Committee is the umbrella committee for all other State and Lodge committees. The Georgia State Lodge Activities Committee's mission is to coordinate, support and promote all Elks activities to enhance the success of every Lodge.
Well-planned and implemented activities usually spell the difference between a progressive Lodge or one that is just drifting along without specific aim or purpose. Lodge activities are classified as
mandatory, prescribed and non-prescribed or local activities. Non-prescribed activities are further divided into social, community and fraternal events.
Mandatory Activities are those required by statute, and include the special activities for Flag Day and Memorial Day.
Prescribed Activities include ritual; participation in the Most Valuable Student Contests; cooperation and support of other programs of the Grand Exalted Ruler; and support and participation in State Association Programs.
Non-prescribed Activities are all those undertaken by the Lodge beyond the scope of mandatory and prescribed activities. It is in this category that the activities Chairperson's attention should be centered and wherein ingenuity and advance planning are essential.
Social Activities include dances, picnics, hayrides, dinners, and a multitude of similar events that bring the Lodge members, their families and friends together in a spirit of sociability.
Community Activities is an area to which lodges should give a great deal of attention. This area encompasses community service, which is essential to improvement of the public image of the Lodge. Public programs, dedications, sponsorship of community celebrations, and youth humanitarian programs within the Lodge jurisdiction are all included in this area of activity.
Fraternal Activities supplement the Lodge meeting. This is probably the most difficult type of Lodge Activity to plan but is one of the most important. Suggested activities should include visits to the Lodge meetings by such groups as veterans, boy/girl scouts, students, public officials and other groups, etc.
